Decolonise your dance making: a First Nations dance making methodology

Credit: Luke Currie-Richardson

This workshop invites dancers to participate in a movement workshop, which provides insight into contemporary dance practice from the perspective of a Wakka Wakka Kombumerri contemporary dance choreographer.

This 20min pre-recorded workshop shares the creative process from a First Nations perspective when creating contemporary dance. Katina’s research stemmed from a need and desire create dance from her own Wakka Wakka and Kombumerri methodologies and lean away from using Western ways of making dance that still dominate the dance industry today.

For dance students from school ages 15yrs and over up to tertiary / pre-professional levels. Non-dancers are also welcome to participate.

If you’re a dance teacher and interested in sharing this with your students, feel free to get in touch at katina.olsen@gmail.com.

Created and filmed at Tallebudgera Creek – Kombumerri Country, Katina’s Great Grandmother’s Country.
